Our Assessment Visits allow us to talk with children and parent/s so we can understand the needs of the children and their familes. Children frequently tell us of worries and feelings which they may not feel able to share if other family members are present, through fear of upsetting them. This may include feelings of distress, responsibility for the death or questions about the circumstances of the death.
We then bring the family together to open up communication and address any areas of concern or confusion. During the assessment we communicate the message that ‘It is OK to cry’ to both the parent/s and child/ren. We often find that the child will hide their tears, for fear of upsetting their relatives and vice versa. Communicating this message means that they can share their grief and support one another.
