The Smiles Appeal aims to raise £350,000 enabling us to acquire our own eco friendly home (to be called Smiles House) providing additional space to increase the range of services that we are able to offer.
In January 2011, Nelson’s Journey relocated from their office space provided by Livability to a new temporary office base provided at no cost by East Anglian solicitors firm Ashton KCJ. They have provided a suite of 3 offices for the charity to continue offering advice, support and information, whilst we raise funds for Smiles House.
The appeal was initially launched in April 2010 and now again in
Dec 2011 in association with the EDP.
We are grateful for all the support we have received so far in our goal
for a new home for Nelson’s Journey. The current economic climate
is tough for everyone, and despite this we are delighted that the Smiles
Appeal continues to make positive fundraising progress. To date we have raised over £65,000.
We are still totally committed to owning our own eco-friendly, cost effective and sustainable home. Given that this is a new field of building our ideas have developed from the initial concepts and we are now seeking to be even more ‘eco-ambitious’ if we can and yes a straw bale new build is still one of our building options. However, if the opportunity were to arise we would also look at ‘greening’ an existing property; therefore whether you are able to help us through fundraising or by locating land or buildings that maybe available, we would love to hear from you.
Why do we want to an environmentally friendly building?
An eco-efficient building will reduce running costs meaning more money can go towards supporting bereaved children, as well as:
- Reducing our carbon impact
- Being a stimulating working environment
- Providing a positive, creative and relaxing place to visit for bereaved young people and their families
‘I was honoured to be asked to act as President of the Smiles Appeal, I am committed to making these amazing new premises happen, and happen quickly. It's the most exciting project ever undertaken by one of Norfolk's premier charities, and is absolutely vital in the work that is done to help children and their families in their hours of greatest need. I shall be knocking on doors and urging everyone to take heed, and help us put the smiles back on the faces of our children.’
We need to raise £350,000 to achieve our goal.
